Free or open source software
As an architect I often see firms spending a huge amount of ¥€$ on software. This is particularly difficult for small businesses and newer firms who must base the very establishment of their company on the availability of software licenses. In an attempt to see if this situation could be eased or changed, I started looking for alternatives to the expensive software solutions normally used in the industry.
The search for these alternatives is what this page is all about. I am not trying to move standards or reinvent practice. Rather, I am simply exploring alternative solutions and will post these along with any other fun stuff that I stumble upon on my way. I don't write fancy reviews or elaborated evaluations. I just communicate what I find.

TopMod is based on a new paradigm that allows dynamically changing the topology of 2-manifold polygonal meshes. The new paradigm always guarantees topological consistency of polygonal meshes.
Based on our paradigm, by simply adding and deleting edges, handles can be created and deleted, holes can be opened or closed, polygonal meshes can be connected or disconnected. These edge insertion and edge deletion operations are highly consistent with subdivision algorithms. In particular, these operations can easily be included into a subdivision modeling system such that the topological changes and subdivision operations can be performed alternatively during model construction.
TopMod demonstrates practical examples of topology changes based on this new paradigm and show that the new paradigm is convenient, effective, efficient, and friendly to subdivision surfaces.
MyPaint is a fast and easy open-source graphics application for digital painters. It lets you focus on the art instead of the program. You work on your canvas with minimum distractions, bringing up the interface only when you need it.
LuxRender is a physically based and unbiased rendering engine. Based on state of the art algorithms, LuxRender simulates the flow of light according to physical equations, thus producing realistic images of photographic quality.
YafaRay is a free open-source raytracing engine. Raytracing is a rendering technique for generating realistic images by tracing the path of light through a 3D scene.
A render engine consists of a “faceless” computer program that interacts with a host 3D application to provide specific raytracing capabilities “on demand”. Blender 3D is the host application of YafaRay.
YafaRay is released under the LGPL 2.1 license. You can downloadYafaRay in the downloads section.
Thunderbird is a free, open-source, cross-platform application for managing email and news feeds. It is a local (rather than a web-based) email application that is powerful yet easy-to-use. See the Thunderbird features page for a summary of the new features included in the latest version.
